Field Day
from the editor
My favorite ham radio event has arrived! Field day is the one events that I know I will get on the air and make a few QSOs, learn a few things about ham radio, break bread with friends, and even try to follow W9JPR’s list of 49 rules about Field Day. Make sure you ask W9JPR about the porta john incident!
When it’s midnight, you’re alone, the sound the radio makes I swear is different than during the day when all the hustle and bustle is going on. I do enjoy working the radio by myself overnight. There is just something challenging about getting that next QSO all by myself! It is faster to have a logger though, so I do welcome a logger. I usually help out with the GOTA station, so if you are looking for me, I usually don’t stray far from the tent.
Last year, I broke from the norm and did Field Day with a friend, N9AFU operating 1D using my call. We struggled a bit getting the G5RV Jr in the trees. Stringing wire antennas in the trees is harder than it looks. The elmers make it look easy. We made 247 QSO points. 2/3rds of those points were CW. N9AFU is a “hot shot” CW operator! Thanks, Mike for the points and good memories!
So I am back with the club this year for field day. The club doesn’t string antennas in trees! LOL! We are using WA9EOL for the GOTA station call in honor of our awesome club treasurer. This year W9HLQ and I are going to break up the overnight shift. A couple of years ago I manned the GOTA station all night and I was a zombie the next day. Evidently, I am not a young as I used to be! KC9EQQ took pics of me sleeping on the picnic table and made a magazine cover out of it. I still have that hung on my wall at home! Thanks, Don!
By the time you read this Field Day 2019 will be in the record books and life will be back to normal. I hope everyone had a good time because I know I did!
