President’s Column

NORA POINTER KC9MLV

July 2020

Hope this column finds everyone staying in and staying safe. We appreciate everyone’s understanding through this pandemic that we cannot have our usual physical in person meeting. We will get through this and we as a club like so many other Ham clubs will begin to meet again and enjoy each other’s company and fellowship once again. Don and I look forward to that day as we miss you all dearly. God bless you and yours.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our June meeting held on the Zoom platform. It sure was an interesting evening and was good to see everyone. Thank you to Brian, W9HLQ for being our host.

HEALTH AND WELFARE: Best wishes and prayers go out to any members who are not feeling well and struggling with your health matters. We are keeping you all in our thoughts and prayers. God Bless all our healthcare workers and all people on the front line during this pandemic. We must remember and keep in our prayers and thoughts those who have lost their lives due to the current Covid 19 virus. We also must remember all those who serve in the medical fields and First Responder Departments that are working hard 24/7 to care for those who are currently battling this terrible disease. Please let us follow all guidelines that are in place at this writing which serve to protect us from devastating effects of which this disease can bring forth to everyone young and old, rich or poor and regardless of ethnic and economic backgrounds.

EDUCATION: Some shows still go on as they say, and that holds true for our VE testing. A great big thank you to Al, N9ZD and his VE’S who have adapted to the current climate and have used his garage for testing. Congratulations for a job well done.

JULY MEETING: Due to the COVID-19 virus situation, and the Governors Stay at Home Order, once again we will not be able to gather in person for our July meeting. So sorry, I know everyone looks forward to the July meeting. We may try to present a Zoom meeting on our regular meeting night. Keep an eye on the web site for further updates and monitor your email. If we are able to present something on our July 10, 2020, meeting night, you will be sent an invitation with a secure code to join the Zoom meeting.

Don and I wish everyone a happy and safe 4th of July.

AUGUST MEETING – HAMFEST: Due to the current pandemic situation and the Governors current guidelines, I regret to inform you that the Hamfesters Board has voted and agreed to cancel this year’s Hamfest that was originally scheduled to be held at the Will County Fairgrounds in Peotone.

T-Shirts: Once we are able to meet again, Hamfesters Polo Shirts will be available for purchase.

As always, we ask you to keep an eye on the website for the most current happenings in our club. Remember to Like us on our Hamfesters Page and spread the word about our great club too! We are the fun place to have a good time of fellowship at all of our events!

CQ Field Day

de Jim Riley W9JPR

As I write this, it’s ten days before Field Day. Barring an unforeseen miracle that allows us to operate normally at Southbridge Church in Orland Park, it looks like we’ll be operating from home in the Delta or Echo categories.

I thought it might be fun to see how we all did. After you get your entry off to the ARRL, send me your totals and I’ll get them in next month’s Hamgab. Specifically, I’m looking for the following: your call (duh); your QSOs broken down by Phone, CW, and Digital if you operate more than one mode; and your claimed score as submitted to the League. I’ll put that info into a spreadsheet and we can see our scores all in one place. If you’re not going to submit your totals, send them to me anyway so you can be added to our club totals. Send it with the subject line “Field Day” to me at w9jpr2016@gmail.com.

The ARRL submission applet can be found at http://field-day.arrl.org/fdentry.php. It’s pretty straightforward but call me if you need help and I’ll walk you through it. Just make sure you write Hamfesters Radio Club in the line marked “Club or Group Name” just like that so our scores can be aggregated in the club totals. Capitalization and spacing are important.

It doesn’t matter if you make one contact or one thousand. We just want to see how our members did operating this most unusual Field Day.

VEs Continue to Brave the COVIDs!
